Why Envelope Weight Matters More Than You Think

When a client asks why we weigh envelopes at every review, I point to a case from 2023. A family brought three envelopes for annual inspection. Two matched their intake weights exactly. The third was 1.2 grams lighter — not enough to notice by hand, but enough to trigger our variance threshold.

Visual inspection showed no obvious seal damage. Under magnification, we found a micro-tear along the flap where someone had likely opened and reclosed the envelope. The family had no record of anyone accessing it. They chose to retire that envelope and create a new sealed packet through our preparation service.

How we weigh

We use a jeweller’s scale calibrated monthly. Each envelope is weighed three times at intake and three times at review. We record the median value, not the average, to reduce vibration errors.

What causes natural variance

Humidity changes can shift paper weight by fractions of a gram. We account for seasonal variation in our threshold — tighter in winter when office humidity is controlled, slightly wider in summer if envelopes are stored without climate control.

What to do at home

If you weigh envelopes yourself between professional reviews, use the same scale each time and note the date. A sudden drop of more than one gram warrants a call to us before you open anything.
